Tapestry crochet is one of the most visually stunning techniques in all of fiber arts. By carrying multiple yarn colors and crocheting over them, you create geometric patterns and colorwork designs directly in the fabric — the result looks almost like a woven textile.
What is Tapestry Crochet?
Tapestry crochet is a colorwork technique where you work with two or more yarn colors simultaneously. The color not in use is carried across the inside of the stitches. When you need to switch colors, you simply pick it up and crochet over the other. This creates a dense, sturdy fabric with the pattern visible on the right side. Perfect for bags, baskets, cushion covers, and wall hangings.

Materials You'll Need
- Crochet hook — Go one size smaller than your yarn label recommends.
- Yarn — 2 or more colors of the same weight. Cotton is ideal for crisp color contrast.
- A tapestry crochet chart — A grid where each square represents one stitch.
- Stitch marker & scissors & yarn needle
Step-by-Step Written Guide
- Read your chart. Work right to left on odd rows, left to right on even rows when working flat. In the round, always read right to left.
- Start with foundation chain. Use Color A. Chain the number of stitches in Row 1 plus 1 for turning chain.
- Begin Row 1 with Color A. When a Color B stitch appears, pick up Color B and lay Color A across the tops of stitches, crocheting over it.
- Switch colors cleanly. On the last yarn-over of the stitch BEFORE the color change, use the new color to complete the stitch.
- Carry the unused color evenly. Not too tight (puckers fabric) and not too loose (creates loops on the back).
- Work row by row following the chart. Continue until the full pattern is complete.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is tapestry crochet hard for beginners?
Best attempted after you're comfortable with single crochet. The carrying technique takes an hour or two to feel natural. Start with a simple 2-color geometric pattern.
Why does my tapestry crochet look twisted?
This usually means the carried yarn is pulling too tight. Keep your carrying hand relaxed.
Can I do tapestry crochet in the round?
Yes — in fact, working in the round is often easier since the right side always faces you.
